Warning: As of now it is unknown how to reverse this effect, so your shop will be pretty broken afterwards; proceed with care.
Preconditions: Theme is activated
1. go to Layout / Design > Template Settings >> Category menu, deactivate 'Show horizontal category navigation in the header' (Show vertical category navigation in the sidebar gets activated automatically), hit save, clear cache
2. go to frontend
* result: all products on the startpage are gone (although they are still activatetd in the template settings)
* on some occasions also the teaser slider vanishes (although still activated)
* reversing the settings in the backend won't bring back the products
